SOLID 3D Engineering GmbH, a company specialised in industrial image processing and software development, decided to use the Time-of-Flight 3D camera Argos3D from BECOM Systems for detecting the storage positions of crankshafts in transport boxes of an OEM supplier.
The aim of the project was to check the position and completeness of the crankshafts in the transport boxes. However, the initial tests using simple 2D industrial cameras were unsuccessful as it soon became clear that the use of industrial cameras is not sufficient due to the lack of depth information. For this reason, the industrial cameras were replaced by the Argos3D depth sensor.
Despite tricky conditions owing to unfavourable reflection characteristics of the crankshaft surface, the Argos3D sensor with its integrated filtering and the HDR mode is largely unfazed by this challenge and provides robust, high-quality image material.
The SOLID DVI (Distributed Vision Intelligence) software is used for subsequently evaluating the data. This software is a vision toolkit specially adapted for industrial use and which can be flexibly configured. Because of the variety of types and large degree of positional variability of the crankshafts, the in-house AI solution SOLID BrainLab is used as the detection module within SOLID DVI in order to ensure robust detection.
Thanks to the powerful Argos3D sensor in combination with the stable and accurate 3D image processing software from SOLID 3D Engineering GmbH, it was possible to develop a stable and reliable system for detecting crankshafts which can also be adapted to other applications with minimal effort.
